Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): Symptoms, Causes and What Actually Helps

Bacterial vaginosis, commonly known as BV, is one of those intimate health topics people often whisper about, search at 2 a.m. and feel unnecessarily embarrassed by.

Let’s remove the shame immediately.

BV is common. It is not a sign that you are dirty, unhygienic or doing something wrong. It happens when the normal balance of bacteria inside the vagina changes.

Understanding what BV is, and what it is not, can help you recognise the signs, avoid habits that may make the imbalance worse and choose gentler products for your external intimate-care routine.

What Is Bacterial Vaginosis?

The vagina naturally contains different types of bacteria. Usually, protective bacteria help maintain its natural environment.

BV develops when this balance changes and certain bacteria begin to outnumber the protective bacteria.

The exact reason this happens is not always clear. Factors associated with BV include douching, having a new sexual partner, having multiple sexual partners and not using condoms.

However, BV is not considered a sexually transmitted infection, and it is not caused by poor hygiene.

What Are the Signs of BV?

Some people with BV experience no symptoms at all.

When symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • Thin white, grey or greenish discharge

  • A strong fishy or unusual odour

  • Itching or irritation

  • Burning when urinating

These symptoms can overlap with yeast infections, sexually transmitted infections and other forms of irritation. This is why diagnosing yourself based on discharge or odour alone is not always reliable.

If something feels or smells noticeably different, a healthcare professional can determine what is causing it and recommend the correct treatment.

Can You Wash BV Away?

No.

BV is an internal bacterial imbalance. It cannot be scrubbed, fragranced or intimate-washed away.

In fact, douching or inserting cleansing products inside the vagina may disturb the protective bacteria further. The vagina is self-cleaning and does not need to be washed internally.

More washing is not more hygiene.

The external area is called the vulva. This area can be gently rinsed with water or cleansed with a mild, fragrance-free product such as Viva La Punani Intimate Wash if preferred.

Choosing a dedicated, fragrance-free external cleanser can help you avoid the harsh soaps and heavily fragranced products that may cause unnecessary irritation.

No internal washing. No deodorising sprays. No perfume party.

How Is BV Treated?

BV is usually treated with antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare professional.

If you are given treatment, use it exactly as directed and complete the full course, even if your symptoms improve earlier.

An intimate wash cannot replace medical treatment. If symptoms continue, return or occur during pregnancy, speak to a healthcare professional.

You should also seek medical advice if you experience pelvic pain, fever, bleeding, sores or any symptom that feels severe or unusual.

Where Does Viva La Punani Fit In?

Viva La Punani Intimate Wash is not a treatment for BV or any other infection. It also cannot guarantee that BV will not occur.

However, it can form part of a gentle external intimate-care routine that avoids harsh, fragranced cleansing products and unnecessary irritation.

Viva La Punani is a fragrance-free cleanser formulated at pH 4.5 and dermatologically tested for delicate external care. Its gentle formula contains antioxidant-rich Goji Berry Extract and can be used by people who prefer a dedicated intimate cleanser instead of ordinary body wash in this sensitive area.

By keeping external cleansing mild, fragrance-free and uncomplicated, Viva La Punani supports the kind of gentle care that respects the intimate area without attempting to interfere with the vagina’s internal bacterial balance.

To use it, apply a small amount to wet hands or a soft, wet cloth. Gently cleanse the external intimate area and rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Never insert the product into the vagina. If irritation occurs, discontinue use.

Gentle Intimate Care Basics

Intimate care should be simple:

  • Never douche or wash inside the vagina
  • Avoid fragranced sprays, deodorants and harsh soaps
  • Choose a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser such as Viva La Punani if preferred

  • Clean the external intimate area only

  • Wipe from front to backWear breathable underwear

  • Change out of damp clothing when possible

  • Speak to a healthcare professional when something feels different

Your intimate area does not need to smell like flowers or have no natural scent at all.

It needs gentle care, breathable fabrics and the freedom to do what a healthy body naturally does.

BV is common, treatable and nothing to be ashamed of. The most important thing is recognising when your body has changed and getting the correct medical care instead of trying to wash the symptoms away.

Viva La Punani cannot treat BV, but it can support a gentler external routine by offering a fragrance-free alternative to harsh soaps and overly fragranced intimate products.
