How to Start Using and Adding New Skincare Products to Your Routine

How to Start Using and Adding New Skincare Products to Your Routine

Thinking of upgrading your skincare routine? Whether you're diving into retinol, Vitamin C or exfoliating acids, introducing new products the right way is key to glowing, irritation-free skin. Here's how to do it like a pro.

1. Understand Your Skin's Needs

Before adding anything new, assess your skin type and concerns. Are you dealing with dryness, acne, sensitivity or dullness? Knowing your skin's needs helps you pick the right products.

2. Research Before You Buy

Not all skincare products are created equal. Read up on ingredients and opt for dermatologically tested brands. Silki products are all dermatologically tested and approved — so you can trust what you're putting on your skin.

3. Introduce One Product at a Time

Adding too many new products at once makes it hard to identify what's causing a reaction. Start with one product and give your skin at least two weeks to adjust before introducing the next.

4. Patch Test Before Full Application

Always patch test new products first. Apply a small amount to your jawline or behind your ear and wait 24-48 hours. No redness, itching or breakouts? You're good to go.

5. Start Slow and Build Up Usage

For potent actives like retinol, acids and Vitamin C, begin with a lower concentration and use it only once or twice a week. Gradually increase frequency as your skin builds tolerance. This prevents irritation and over-exfoliation.

6. Layer Your Products Correctly

Apply products from lightest to heaviest: cleansertonerserummoisturiserSPF (AM only). Thin, water-based products go first, followed by thicker, oil-based ones.

7. Avoid Ingredient Conflicts

Not all ingredients mix well. Avoid using retinol with AHAs/BHAs in the same routine. When in doubt, simplify your routine and focus on a few key actives. Read more on how to tell if your skin is purging or reacting.

8. Don't Forget SPF

New skincare — especially exfoliants and retinoids — can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Always wear SPF 30+ every morning without fail.

9. Be Patient and Consistent

Skincare is a marathon, not a sprint. While hydrating serums show quick results, actives like retinol and Vitamin C take weeks to months to show their full effects. Stick with it — your best skin is just a routine away.
