Skincare Mistakes You’re Making that You Have to Stop Now

So... you take care of your skin? Ok, that’s a great start... but are you doing it correctly? At times, even with the best intentions, we make mistakes that sabotage our efforts without even realising it. Here are some of the biggest mistakes to avoid, along with what to do instead.

Confession: I’m guilty of at least 3.

  • Over-exfoliating
  • Using Polyester Sheets
  • Relying on Face Wipes
  • Applying Hyaluronic Acid to Dry Skin
  • Skipping Sunscreen

Over-exfoliating

Over-exfoliation is one of the most common skincare faux pas. Repeat after me. Less is more when it comes to exfoliation. Gentle exfoliation is an essential part of achieving flawless skin.  But going too heavy with the exfoliator spells trouble. You’ll be left with a damaged skin barrier and inflammation which can lead to acne and an array of other skin conditions. We don’t want that. Exfoliate the right way with Silki’s Exfoliating Glove or Dermablade. Your skin will look and feel amazing, and better yet, it will be well cared for.

Using Polyester Sheets

Aside from it being bad for the environment, it’s not good for your skin. Would you consider taking a bath in petrol? Sound appetizing to you? No? Polyester is a petroleum product that may contain hidden additives and contaminants. Sure it’s easy on the pocket but overtime it’s really harsh on your skin and hair. It’s not a naturally breathable fabric and it soaks up oils and grease. Gross. Opt for a natural fabric, like silk,  that absorbs less moisture and dirt and is a much better choice for people with acne and those looking to prevent wrinkles (all of us).

Relying on Face Wipes

Face wipes definitely have their place, but skipping cleansing and using wipes instead, is a bad idea. One of the biggest disadvantages of using facial wipes is that they don’t clean your skin thoroughly. They remove some makeup, yes, but face wipes should not and cannot adequately replace your cleanser.

Applying Hyaluronic Acid to Dry Skin

Hyaluronic products are ideal to inject moisture into the skin. It gives skin a plump, smooth and most importantly younger look. Experts say that this hero ingredient needs to be applied to damp skin in order to work. Applying it to a dry face can have the opposite effect of what is intended, and actually leave skin more dehydrated.

You see, hyaluronic acid is a humectant. That means that it draws moisture towards it and holds onto it so that the skin can lap it up. Apply it to damp, not wet, skin to reap all the benefits. Oh and don’t forget your moisturiser! You have to lock in hyaluronic acid with a well-formulated moisturiser to seal it in.

Skipping Sunscreen

Fan of photoaging and skin damage are you? Come on guys, we know better than to skip sunscreen. Without sunscreen our skins are left vulnerable and exposed to harmful UV rays.  Almost 90% of premature skin aging happens because of harmful sun exposure. So, the more time you spend in the sun, the older you will appear. Fact.

What about you guys? Are you guilty of some of these skincare sins? The good news is that these are all easy fixes. Ever since I cleaned up my act, my skin has improved dramatically.  So go ahead, get started and get ready to welcome beautiful skin.
